Just discovered one of my front wheels has a crack on the inside! My otherwise good tire has been slowly losing pressure only to discover it's the crack in the wheel that's the culprit. Question: can a good job be done on this wheel to restore roundness and pressure retention? I got a quote which is about exactly half the price of a 'new' reconditioned one - wondering if it's worth it in the long run? You can always find someone who can fix it and say no worries. Dec 24, 2012 - Cracked alloys happen depending on how fragile the components are, how the alloys were welded and crucially how they have been tested. BMW noticed this and the company decided to rectify the situation with a new policy about the alloy wheels. Wieland Bruch, the company spokesman for BMW said:. I had a rare set of Boyd Codington alloys on a previous car, one got cracked from a pot hole, I had this repaired and was fine for the following year I owned the car. We welded a 19' BMW wheel as we were sick of replacing them. As they crack. I've seen some amazing repairs done. Now the big question, would you trust your life, your loved ones, and any unlucky strangers who you have an accident with on the highway? I would pony up the 4 or so Ben Franklins and sleep better then a spend 1 Franklin and live with what ifs. Just discovered one of my front wheels has a crack on the inside! Bmw Alloy Wheel Repair CostI'm in the same boat. + the rest of my wheels are rashed too (most of them came that way, one of them was my fault) so I'm just biting the bullet and buying new wheels. Since I'm on my winters, I've got a few months to find the 'perfect' set though. Very tough to fix an alloy wheel and make it last. There are a multitude of videos and shops that tackle this subject. Many videos show large cracks being welded up in seconds and the tire remounted and re-balanced after only surface grinding the inside flange. The truth is that most of these repairs may only last a short while and can lead to more catastrophic failures. This is the original 'don't do this at home' project - if you are going to do it, find a qualified shop with great reviews! In general, cracks that are small and in the upright portion of the tire mounting flange can be fixed (for awhile anyway). Once the crack is 'L' shaped and going from the upright to flat portion of the tire mounting surface, you should really consider replacement for safety of yourself and the driving public. This is definitely true if there are cracks in the mounting flange - usually no one is brave enough to try and fix anything around the mounting bolts. Buildsoft cracker barrel. Tracking your car is a whole other risk assessment. There is a huge difference been using chewing gum welding to stop air leakage from a crack and proper welding and annealing (to remove welding stress) to restore a rim to its proper design specifications. The essential problem is that aluminum or alloy is very tough to weld. Without proper post weld treatment, that part of the rim becomes a point that is either weaker or stronger than the surrounding metal. The conditions (potholes, balance, low pressure, aggressive driving) that lead to the original failure are likely to re-occur and the repaired rim will fail again either on the welded crack line or in surrounding areas and usually to a worse degree. Unfortunately, the sexier the rim and tire configuration, the more you are likely to enjoy the sooner or later cracked rim experience!
